Helping rescue dachshunds reach their new homes!
The Dachshund Underground Railroad was formed in November of 1997 in response to a puppy mill raid in Flagler County Florida that had an abundance of Dachshunds that many thought would not be able to find a good home locally. A group of Dachshund lovers began to chat on a message board, wishing there were a way to help get those Dachshunds to the homes across North America that would love to care for them. Lisa Rawlinson took that idea and ran with it forming the Dachshund Underground Railroad (DUR).
Ironically all of the hundreds of Dachshunds in that puppy mill found local homes in and around Flagler county. But the DUR soon found it was needed for other Dachshunds around the US and so Lisa began to recruit more volunteers to help cover all the "empty" areas of the country and before she knew it there were over 500 volunteers in the US and Canada! The DUR has been cruising ever since; helping wayward Dachshunds with transportation to their newly found adoptive homes.
If you would like to help transport these needy Dachshunds then please fill out our volunteer form. We could always use another driver - even if you can't drive more than an hour round trip! The DUR calls on its individual drivers rarely so the commitment you are making is typically a minimal one at best. The amount of transporting you do is always up to you.
We have one couple who helps with week long hauls across the country in their motor home but we have many more who do just as much by helping out the one time we need them. So if you would love to help out the beloved little Dachshunds then sign up today!
If you can't drive or just don't have the time you can always help support the cause by visiting our store and buying some of our DUR merchandise - featuring our adorable Dachshund mascot Oscar. All proceeds for the sales of merchandise goes to helping keep the DUR alive by funding this website to help us find new volunteers and coordinating transportation for our favorite breed - the Dachshund!
If your thinking of opening a Cafe Press store - please mention the doxie.org store as your referral. This also helps us raise money to offset the cost of operations. Our store name is DUR - Thanks!
If you have recently adopted a Dachshund that lives too far away for you to move to your home you can apply for transportation of the dog from its current home to yours. We carefully evaulate each request and help out everyone we can - so long as they meet our minimal requirements for aid which you can learn about in the FAQ.
